Process

Initial Consultation

We will begin with a consultation where you are encouraged to share your desires, needs, aesthetic style and any other thoughts you may have formed about your outdoor space.  Our designer will answer any questions you may have about our approach and qualifications and begin to formulate preliminary ideas on how your space might begin to take shape.  We’ll also discuss the project budget and timeline, two other key elements of a successful project.

There is no charge for the initial consultation.  Design fees vary depending on the size and complexity of the project.  Should you decide to proceed with our services, we will end the consultation with an analysis of the site, including:

  • Grading, drainage and slope condition
  • Existing visual character of your site
  • Inventory of existing vegetation
  • Context of the site and architecture (including views to and from the site)
  • Existing circulation patterns
  • Connection of the house and land
  • Sun/shade and soil characteristics

Design

Next we will set about creating a vision for your landscape by combining your input with the site analysis and our creativity…a winning combination!  During the design phase, we will also provide a preliminary budget estimate and further discuss your expectations for an installation timeline.

Typically, the primary means of communicating the project design is a scaled plan which shows all the design elements necessary to complete the overall vision.  Other tools we can employ to communicate the design more thoroughly are color graphics, computer generated 3D models, as well as cross sections and elevations.

For more complex projects it may be necessary to create a more detailed set of documents which might include layout and grading plans, installation specifications and construction details.

Implementation

Once a design is finalized it is time to starting thinking about implementation.  You will likely have many questions regarding construction methods, material selections, order of operations, etc.  Whether you choose one of our contractor partners or are using your own contractor, we are happy to provide you with installation management services

We’ll use our years of experience designing and building landscapes to guide you through the process, answering any questions which you may have during this phase of the project.  This guidance can include:

  • Final selection of materials
  • Layout of the key elements of the design (including plant material, patios, retaining walls, fire and water features, etc…)
  • Inspection of plant and construction material prior to installation
  • Site observation to ensure the contractor is using acceptable installation methods
  • Coordination of change orders should there be modifications during the installation

Our installation management services are meant to ensure the spirit of the design is carried through to reality.

Landscape Management

The maturation and management of your landscape is the key to ensuring your investment becomes the vision created back in the design phase.  Fertilization, pruning, plant replacement, disease, and pest diagnosis, as well as paving, retaining wall and water feature maintenance should all be addressed in a quality plan.

Jeff Feece Designs can create specific landscape management guidelines which are a blueprint for you or your management company to follow.  Or if you like we can manage this aspect of your project as well, working with quality landscape management professionals who are experienced and knowledgeable in fields of horticulture, arboriculture, lawn care, etc.
